A Comprehensive Guide to Area 51 Location:
451 South 400 West, Salt Lake City, Utah. See Directions Info Line: (801) 534-0819 Hours of Operation: Wednesday through Sunday. Hours vary slightly depending on which night it is and the size of the crowd, but in general the club is open from 9:00 PM until approximately 2:00 AM.
Club Regulations: Area 51 is a private club for members. It's 18+, but they might let you in if you at least look 18. No hats are allowed, sorry. Yes, you can smoke anywhere inside (a rare thing in Utah). However, you can't take any beverages from the bar to the all ages area or vice versa. Be sure not to park in the middle of the road along the train tracks; don't park in the middle of 5th South; and please, don't block anyone in. The police will tow you. Price: Memberships are available for those 21+ at $25 a year. Members get in free. Cover charge for non-members is $5 for those under 21, $3 for those 21+. $1 off cover before 10:00 PM. Ladies get in free all night on Wednesdays. Drinks are reasonably priced around $3 - $8 with beer specials on Wednesday and Sunday nights. Layout: Two floors, each with a large dance floor and 21+ full bar. One coin-op pool table in the all-ages area downstairs, two in the bar downstairs, along with darts. The Area 51 video game in the all-ages downstairs area is a nice touch. There's a soda bar upstairs and downstairs in the all-ages areas. Plenty of seats and spots to relax, even couches. That fact might be helpful to know when choosing whether to wear combat boots or stilletto heels. Just observing people is easy from one of the many dark corners. There's also a set of stairs leading from the upstairs bar to the downstairs bar so that you can go from bar to bar with your drink. There's a patio/balcony type area outside upstairs with some tables and chairs and a new downstairs patio accessible from the upstairs dancefloor. These are good for catching a breath of fresh air or conversing with friends. Definitely a good place to cool off. Coat check is available at each of the juice bars for $1. Atmosphere: With a dark, warehouse-like feel, Area 51 is true to its name. The theme throughout is X-Files and aliens, with a scrupulous attention to detail in decorations. The location is in the heart of industrialized Salt Lake. Take a peek at a few photos.

Venue: Area 51 is an outstanding concert venue, even allowing photography on most occasions. Bands such as Faith and Disease, Hate Dept., Kevorkian Death Cycle, Luxt, Attrition, Scar Tissue, Switchblade Symphony, Faith and the Muse, black tape for a blue girl, Genitorturers and Front Line Assembly have all played there. If you are interested in booking Area 51 for a concert, contact club owner Alan Moss. To see what concerts are coming to Area 51 in the next few months, go to the Events Calendar page. Directions Highway and road construction is nearly complete and although some navigation is stillsomewhat difficult, but the grid system of the city is wonderfully logical. For specifics, see the Yahoo Map for a look at the area, or check out the Yahoo Driving Directions from your exact starting point. Be careful about using those directions though, some of the roads it tells you to take might be closed due to construction. Try to decipher the directions listed below first. From I-15: Heading southbound towards downtown, take the 600 South exit heading eastbound. Turn left at the 400 West intersection, and go through the traffic signal at 500 South (it may be a little slow, since 500 South is a major entrance onto the interstate). In the next block, you'll see a big "Jesus Saves" sign on the right (east) side of the road. The Area 51 parking lot is right by that sign.
